Splash! Dive Into Grenada's Azure Waters For The Perfect Invigorating Antidote To City Blues

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, restrictions and protective measures may be in place at time of travel. Please check travel advice and availability of activities at time of booking.

From river tubing through an exotic rainforest to braving a cool mountain pool at the foot of a waterfall, let the pristine waters of Grenada rejuvenate you

If you fancy doing something completely different on your next holiday, how about sitting in an inflatable ring and whirling down one of the most beautiful rivers in the Caribbean? Or perhaps you’d prefer to splash around at the bottom of a 65 ft waterfall in the middle of a rainforest, or go scuba diving to see the world’s first-ever underwater sculpture park.

You can do all of these wonderful watery activities - and many more - on a visit to the heavenly island of Grenada - and you can get there with British Airways. You can book with confidence, safe in the knowledge that you can change your date or destination if you need to.

For anyone in need of thrills, a river tubing adventure down the Balthazar, aka the Great River, should be top of the to-do list. It works like this: you join a group of entertaining, experienced guides for a quick safety talk, then grab a hard hat and a rubber ring (or ‘tube’). You’re soon in the water and off down the river, enveloped by dazzling rainforest and exotic tropical vegetation. It’s a rip-roaring natural rollercoaster of a ride; you’ll find yourself floating in tranquil pools, zipping down rapids, squealing in delight and breathing sighs of wonder as you go.

For more adrenaline-charged thrills, Grenada has some spectacular waterfalls to discover. Perhaps the most dazzling of all is Concord Falls, a series of three cascades in the Grand Etang Forest Reserve. It’s worth visiting all three to see the spectacular scenery; the first is easily accessible, while the second is reached after a trek through the forest reserve and nutmeg farms. The third, Fontainebleau, is the hardest to reach but the most striking: the water drops down a 65ft cliff, making a swim (and a power shower) in the natural pond below marvellously refreshing as well as memorable.

On the coast, there’s also a load of fun to be had, both in and on the water. Take a boat trip around the island, jump on a banana boat, or take a ’Grenada Seafari’ - a whistle stop snorkelling trip by power boat. Grenada’s exotic underwater world makes it a first-rate diving destination: there are 15 shipwrecks dotted around the waters, as well as a submerged volcano to explore; many are no more than 15 minutes from the shore. With more than 30 diving and snorkelling sites around Grenada and sister island Carriacou, all abilities are catered for - you’re guaranteed to see an abundance of incredible marine life, and there’s a chance of spotting pods of dolphins and the occasional whale if you’re lucky. Best of all, diving in Grenada is from boats, so you can be back in time for lunch!

Perhaps the most special - and spectacular - of all of Grenada’s aquatic adventures is a diving trip to the world-famous Underwater Sculpture Park, just off the west coast. This subaquatic art gallery - the first of its kind in the world - provides a dazzling visual treat just below the surface, for ocean enthusiasts, environmentalists and art lovers alike.

Created in 2006 by Jason deCaires Taylor, a scuba diving British sculptor, sculptures include ‘Vicissitudes’, a circle of life-sized figures of children holding hands on the sea bed, and ‘Grace Reef’, 16 female forms lying across a sandy, sun-dappled reef. Many of the eerie figures here are made from a special cement designed to attract corals to grow on them, and the result is a part-natural, part-man-made wonder that is constantly changing.

Colourful sponges and algae bloom on the sculptures and marine life feeds off the growing plants. As you swim over and dive among the brooding figures, you’ll notice how the underwater light constantly changes and shifts, making the experience feel other-wordly. It’s certainly an unforgettable experience and it’s no surprise that the Underwater Sculpture Park is one of Grenada’s top-rated attractions: an unforgettable experience on a unique island.
