Get back to nature with trails, dramatic landscapes, lush rainforests and more with our lowdown on Saint Lucia’s great outdoor activities.

It’s hard to put into words that serene feeling you get when you stroll through a rainforest, hike a mountain, or stare at the sun setting over the sea. We all need to immerse ourselves in nature and recharge our bodies and souls now and again - and Saint Lucia is the ideal place to do just that.

Around an eight-and-a-half-hour flight away with British Airways from London, Saint Lucia boasts extraordinary geographical wonders, and provides a haven for anyone craving quality time with Mother Nature. The island harbours wondrous biodiversity, from dense rainforests to dramatic volcanic landscapes. Venture beyond the gorgeous beaches and you’ll discover lush botanical gardens, landscapes full of birds and flowers and rushing waterfalls. With British Airways you can book with confidence, safe in the knowledge that you can change your date or destination if you need to.

One of the best ways to explore is on foot. Saint Lucia’s hiking and trekking trails are among the finest in the world, boasting unrivalled views and delightful flora and fauna.

The beautiful Tet Paul Nature Trail, known by locals as the ‘Stairway to Heaven’, is a great starting point. The short but exhilarating trail will inspire novices and experienced hikers alike; take it slowly and stop to admire the wildlife and marvel at the incredible vistas from the view points, dotted along the trail.

A walk through Sulphur Springs Park to the crater takes you past pools bubbling and belching with sulphur-laden steam. Just outside the Springs, you can bathe in warm sulphuric pools, reputed for their soothing effects. Legend has it that the mud here helps detoxify the body, heals sunburn, cures eczema and soothes sore joints, and locals swear by its youth-preserving secrets.

If mud bathing isn’t your thing, a refreshing natural rainforest bath may be just the ticket. Take a hike to one of the many waterfalls on the island and if you’re lucky you could have it all to yourself. The spectacular Dennery Falls (also known as Errand Falls and Sault Falls), over on the Atlantic Coast, is a hidden gem with a splendid 55ft drop. As it’s slightly off the beaten track, it tends to be very peaceful, and it’s a lovely spot for a shower after a rainforest walk.

A trek through Edmund Rain Forest Reserve and the Millet Bird Sanctuary is another unmissable experience for nature lovers. Wildlife abounds here, and you’ll see many of Saint Lucia’s 167 species of bird - look out for the Saint Lucia parrot. As you explore, you’ll get distant glimpses of the ocean and a fantastic view of Mount Gimie, along with magnificent waterfalls such as the Enbas Saut.

The Diamond Waterfalls are another of Saint Lucia’s must-visits. Often described as one of the natural wonders of Saint Lucia, the water cascading down the falls is laced with minerals which contribute to a kaleidoscope of colours that appear as the water hits onto the rock face. Nestled in the Botanical Gardens, you can also roam among amazing tropical trees and plants, spotting wildlife including beautiful hummingbirds the size of your thumb. It’s a little slice of paradise on earth - and just the tonic for anyone who needs to recharge their body, mind and soul.
